Fallen

Album CoverEvanescence‘s 2003 album Fallen is near the top of Jed’s Music Charts this week. It’s difficult to describe this interesting album. It is creepy and unearthly, but at the same time strikingly beautiful. Heavy metal-ish guitars combine with Amy Lee‘s delicate singing and piano-playing in a most intriguing way.

My favorite song from the album is “My Immortal.” It is quiet and introspective, with piano as the lead instrument and some orchestral backing. Another cool song is “Haunted” which features some very weird chord progressions (like you might hear in an old-time Frankenstein film). Amy sings a backing track which is an octave below her lead track, which really adds an eerie feel to the song. And then of course the guitars and drums kick in.

Amy LeeWhile not necessarily a “Christian” album, Fallen definitely has some God-honoring content. For example, the song “Tourniquet” mentions crying out to God for salvation and deliverance. Evanescence tends to focus on the darker aspects of life (like fear, loneliness, etc.), but I think they are able to do it in a way that doesn’t promote hopelessness and despair.

So, bottom line… this is a great album. Go buy it now!
