Harp Concert(s)
Christian harpist Greg Buchanan played a concert at my church tonight. He has a very soulful style of playing that’s fun to listen to (especially when it’s being performed on a harp!) Mr. Buchanan’s harp is an acoustic-electric model, which means it is able to be electronically amplified. Since I love amplified music (especially when it has lots of bass), this made me very happy.
Mr. Buchanan played mostly modern praise/worship songs and a few classic hymns. It was a great choice of music, and was very worshipful… however, I must confess… I found myself wishing that he would break into a harp rendition of “Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness” or “Galapagos” by the Smashing Pumpkins (sorry, I’m a hopeless rock music fan!).
Earlier today at the morning service, I got to hear a harp duet by Bethany and her mom (harpists who go to my church). I enjoyed it immensely (even though it wasn’t rock music). Actually, looking back on this morning’s duet in comparison with Greg Buchanan’s performance, I think I would have to say I’m partial to my friends’ harp playing. Their duet was very smooth and precise, while Mr. Buchanan’s playing tended to be more free and experimental. Experimental is good, but I think the traditional/classical playing styles demonstrate a more commendable amount of effort and skill.
