Pike’s Peak

On Saturday, my family and I visited Pike’s Peak State Park near McGregor, Iowa. This was the second time we have visited Pike’s Peak… it is perhaps the coolest state park in Iowa, so make sure you check it out if you haven’t already.

We had a very relaxing and enjoyable afternoon. The weather was just perfect… slightly overcast, cool, and no wind. We hiked a backwoods trail near the “effigy mounds” (earth formations which were apparently created by Native Americans a long time ago) and it was very peaceful. We had fun recalling the good times we had the last time we were at Pike’s Peak (like the infamous Tree-climbing Contest, etc.)

It was just a really great afternoon. It was nice break from the “real world” — a chance for me to forget about my troubles for a day and enjoy God’s creation. Following are some pictures we took (click them for a larger version)…

Looks like a fun trip! Have you been to Cedar Rock?

Is the infamous tree climbing contest anything like the noodle incident?

(Do you know what that’s a reference to? Or, with better grammar: do you know to what that is a reference?)

Haven’t been to Cedar Rock yet. It does look like a fun place. That will have to be our next weekend excursion.

And yes. Yes the tree-climbing contest is most definitely like the infamous noodle incident (I had a vague remembrance of the reference, and a Google search helped me fully restore my memory. It’s been a while since I read Calvin & Hobbes.)

Josiah won the contest — he got a foot or two farther up the tree(s) than I did. Nobody got hurt, so I guess it’s not really that infamous… yet.
