Read Books
A while ago, I checked out Pride and Prejudice and Mansfield Park from the Cedar Rapids Public Library (which is one of my favorite places). As I handed the books to the librarian, she smiled and said, “I bet this is for a class project, right?” When I told her no, to the contrary, it was simply for enjoyable reading, she looked very surprised.
A few days ago, while searching for a book at the University of Iowa Main Library, I was struck by how few students seemed to be there with literature in mind. The book section (which, incidently, is on the fourth floor) was nearly deserted, but the small cafe (on the first floor) was absolutely packed.
Hmm… I wonder what this means. I am reminded of some interesting statistics regarding reading that I found on a friend’s blog.
Do the majority of people have an aversion to reading books? Do they find reading tedious rather than enjoyable? If so, that’s very sad.
