“Funny” Coupon

Is it just me, or is the “humor” in food-product advertisements getting more and more lame with each passing year?

It seems like major food companies have no clue how to be funny.

Domino’s PizzaTo see an example of what I’m talking about, check out the Domino’s Pizza ad to the left (click on the image to enlarge). First of all, parts of it don’t make any sense (“If you’re not watching sports, how do you know when it’s time to eat?” — wait, WHAT? What does that even mean?)

Secondly, the parts that do make sense (and are obviously attempts at humor) are nothing more than trite generalizations. For example, “Watching sports-related entertainment is an activity generally recognized as a good use of the gift of time by 18 to 34 year-old men and by the women who love them. Not a fact. Just common sense.”

Not funny. In fact, it is so un-funny that it made me frown instead of smile when I first read it.

I think that food companies need to do one of two things:

  1. Start utilizing humor that is original, creative, and funny.
  2. Lay off the humor entirely.

Perhaps I should pursue a career as a comedy writer for Domino’s.

Hmm, that’s weird. It’s working fine for me. Did you try refreshing the page several times? Sometimes that seems to help.

Let me know if it still fails to show up… there may be a problem with the image.
