Pale Is The New Tan

Today as I was walking through the mall in Iowa City, I passed a type of shop known as a tanning salon. Apparently, this is a place were people (typically female) go to get bombarded with harmful UV rays in order to achieve an unnaturally tan skin tone.

There were about 15 or more girls lined up outside the store, meaning that there were probably even more inside.

What are everybody’s thoughts on this? Personally, I am horrified and repulsed.

I personally dislike the idea of a tanning salon. Overly tan people look older and unhealthy to me. If you want to have a ‘healthy glow’, actually spend time out of doors playing sports, swimming, biking, etc. But don’t fake the look.

I have heard, though, that if you’re going on a vacation where it’s likely that you’d get sunburned, you can help yourself by getting a light tan. The tan helps you not burn as easily. So in that way, I don’t think tanning Salons are all bad.

Agreed. Fake tans are nasty.

Another way to avoid sunburns is by vacationing in non-sunny areas! This is my strategy.

I mean, seriously… who wants to go to the beach anyway?!? Jellyfish stings. Dangerous undercurrents. Fat people wearing skimpy bathing suits. Non-fat people wearing skimpy bathing suits. Shark attacks. Not my idea of a good time.

But what about a cruise? I think a cruise is an awesome vacation idea, and all that time on the deck could burn you.

Ooh good point. A cruise certainly has the potential for being enjoyable.

Maybe they would have those tables with umbrellas on the deck. That’s where I would sit. :)
