Greatest Films of All Time

I love top-ten lists. I have previously written about my favorite music albums. Now I’m writing about my favorite movies.

It’s a bit of a pointless excercise, because most things that I like are despised and detested by everybody I know. But oh well. I can’t think of anything else to write about.

Anyway, I would welcome some reader participation here!!! What are your favorite N movies (where N is an integer between 1 and 10)?

My top movies are Pride and Prejudice (starring Kierra Knightly as Elizabeth), Phantom of the Opera (starring Emmy Rossum as Christine) and Pride and Prejudice (starring Colin Firth as Darcy) The Lord of the Rings Two Towers, LOTR Return of the King, LOTR Fellowship of the Ring, Sense and Sensibility, The Pink Panther (starring Beyonce as someone), Dinotopia (the one with the guy from Wishbone and Prison Break in it), and all four seasons of Geeves and Wooster (Starring Hugh Laurie).

My top tv shows are Monk, Star Trek Enterprise, Stargate SG-1, and What Not To Wear.

Note, this is not an all inclusive list. These were all off the top of my head.

Yeah, LOTR almost made my list (it was number 11). Good movie.

Hey good idea, TV shows are another interesting related item… my favorites include The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes (with Jeremy Brett), The Dick Van Dyke Show, Star Trek, The Andy Griffith Show, Jeeves & Wooster, etc.

Oh! I forgot Mythbusters! They’re great!

Did I spell Geeves/Jeeves wrong, or did you? I have a sinking feeling that I did. In fact, I’m sure I did. OOPS.

Did you even have to ask? My spelling is always impeccable.

This is due to my brilliant mind (and to a lesser extent, Firefox’s built-in spelling checker).

Hey! I have a brilliant mind too! I’m just spelling impaired.

I forgot The Incredibles, the best animated film of all time.

Haha you’re right, Bethany. I guess virtuosity in the area of spelling is not a prerequisite for brilliance. :)

Oh yeah!!! I totally forgot to consider animated films. I probably would have put Shrek on the list.

Jeeves and Wooster?! Yes, they are pretty wonderful, aren’t they? Fry and Laurie do such a smash up job, what what? The books by Wodehouse aren’t half bad, are they, eh, Bethany? Jolly good, I think. And all four seasons are available on YouTube! Smashing!

Yay! Another Wodehouse aficionado….I enjoy the books, and like the programs (which I’ve only seen on YouTube). Hmmm. My favorites..

In no particular order, and with very little thought aforehand…

Lord of the Rings Trilogy (that only counts as one, because that’s how Tolkien meant it), Ben-Hur, Little Women, The Incredibles, Finding Nemo, Beauty and the Beast, Mr. Smith Goes to Washington….

others of which I can’t think…I need to go check my video/DVD collection. Do TV programs collected as seasons count?

Haha, Nathan, sounds like you need to join me in attending YouTube-aholics Anonymous. :)

I agree… Jeeves & Wooster is simply marvelous (at least the films are… I haven’t read the books).

Oh, and collections of TV programs are acceptable as “films.”

…OK, then I’ll add “The Waltons” to my favorites – but don’t tell anyone! :)

The Waltons… AAAAHHH!! NOOOO!

Now I will have nightmares. Thanks a lot, Nathan. :)

I’ve yet to read a Wodehouse book.
Jed, if you can scream at “The Waltons” then I can scream at “Shrek”.
AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAH!

Ellie Ann, I read Bourne Identity before watching the movie, and that totally ruined the movie for me (it is nothing like the book)… but I will admit it’s a pretty exciting film and the actor who plays Bourne does a great job.

Oh Bethany… I can only hope that someday you will realize the awesomeness of DreamWorks and their animated films.

It’s interesting that you have Chariots of Fire on the top of your list. I recently ran across this (after it had begun) on TV, and thought that I’d like to watch it again. I first saw it when I was about your age, and thought that it was frightfully dull. I suspect that I would appreciate it much better now.

Why scream at the Waltons? The characters are ugly, but there are some innocent, fun moments in there that make up for a great deal.

Also, should the title of this really be “Greatest Films of All Time”? There is a difference between “greatest” and “my favorite” films. There are many films that are great, but that I haven’t seen; there are many films that are great, but that I don’t enjoy as much as, say, Finding Nemo. Shrek could hardly be considered truly great by anyone, although many could easily list it as a favorite. Potemkin may be considered great (although I would dispute it), but probably not on many favorite lists. Of course, there are those films that are on both lists: Little Women, Ben-Hur….. :) So, do you need to start a separate list for the “greatest” and one for the “favorites”?

Same here, Mr. Wheeler. The first time I saw it (probably ten years ago), I was bored out of my mind. I watched it again a few years ago, and I was amazed.

Eloprah, you have a good point there! The title is probably a misnomer. :) Although, I’m not sure how you can say that Finding Nemo is great, while Shrek is not!!!

How about these, that have not yet been mentioned:

The Ten Commandments
Where the Red Fern Grows
Father of the Bride
Monsters, Inc.
The Man from Snowy River

I was saying that Finding Nemo was on my favorite list, although I don’t know that anyone would necessarily consider it great.

Inconceivable! We neglected to mention The Princess Bride.

Excellent point. That is one of the best movies for sure! If I forget it again I will be very put out.

Man from Snowy River?! Ha ha- My boyfriend loves that movie, I didn’t know anyone else had seen it!

Haha… I see, Nathan! I agree… Finding Nemo is a very good animated film.

Mr. W and Ellie Ann, I concur… Man from Snowy River is rather excellent. I haven’t seen Princess Bride in a very long time, so I don’t remember whether I like it or not (I’ll have to watch it again).

I happen to know that The Man from Snowy River would be at or near the top of the list made by one of Jed’s kin.
