Missions
I recently attended (part of) a missions conference with my friends the Harpoles at their church. It was encouraging and challenging, and I really enjoyed it.
The youth choir sang several songs about missions, and they also did some dramatic monologues and narratives from the lives of famous missionaries. Everything was very nicely done, and it was even better due to the fact that my friend Laura was one of the participants (good job, Laura!).
The first missionary that spoke (I can’t remember her name) is currently ministering in Papua New Guinea. She got a degree in physical therapy before she felt God calling her into missions. It sounds like she spends most of her time teaching (English classes, etc.), but opportunities sometimes arise in the field where she is able to use her college training as well.
The second missionary that spoke (Tim Berrey) is serving in the Philippines. He talked about the importance of prayer (we need to pray that God will “send out workers into His harvest field,” as Luke 10:2 says). He also spoke about the responsibility that has been given to each one of us. As Christians, we are basically commanded to be missionaries (Matthew 28:16-20). Mr. Berrey made an interesting point — God is calling YOU (and ME) to a specific tribe or nation or people group. You often hear people say “well, God hasn’t called me into missions.” WRONG. He has. Maybe He hasn’t called you overseas, but that simply means He wants you to be a missionary to the Americas (maybe even a missionary to the town you currently live in).
So yeah… I’m excited about missions. I think I’m ready to go where God wants me to go, I’m just (as of now) unsure exactly where that is!!

Did Amy speak about her trip to Peru on this same night that you were there?
