Bee Movie, Part II
So I guess I’ll tell you what I thought of Bee Movie. I thought that it was okay. Personally, I’m getting a little bit tired of all these bland high-action animated movies that are obviously designed to showcase all of the fancy new CG technology (could we please slow things down a bit and concentrate on developing interesting stories and characters?!?).
The film didn’t really touch my heart or anything like that. I did get a little bit teary-eyed, but I think that was only because I was recovering from some sort of illness and I was exhausted.
Basically the story is about this talking bumblebee who wants to see what’s outside the hive, so he goes out into the world and discovers that he can communicate with the humans. He also discovers that humans are stealing honey from the bees and making a profit on it, and he vows to stop that atrocity. Blah blah blah. Happily ever after.
It reminded me a bit of the film Cars (just replace all the cars with bees).
If you want to know what my idea of an interesting and original CG movie is… check out Hoodwinked!. It doesn’t have super-high-quality CG, but it does have a VERY unique and funny story, beautiful original music (one of the songs is even by Ben Folds), a varied cast of animated characters, great vocal talent, and artful usage of lighting and perspective, all of which add together to produce an awesome surrealistic film that can be enjoyed even by sophisticated adults like myself.
