I still think this is a creepy song.

Awww… I think it’s pretty! And the video is really cute too.

Was that Lennon singing that?

I wonder if the new earth will be like that. No religion (because we’d all be ‘Christians’) no possessions, no war, nothing to kill over. Of course, their will still be God and heaven and hell. I thinks he’s hoping for an ideal that can’t be realized here on earth. And that’s sad. And when people here this, they think ya! We just need to get rid of religions and God and countries and we can live in harmony. This song leads people to reject God, the only One who could actually give them what they want. Hmm.

Yeah that’s John (and his wife Yoko Ono) in the video.

You’re definitely right in saying that the idyllic world displayed in the song will never happen here on earth. And it’s certainly dangerous to pursue that to the exclusion of God, religion, etc.

But although the song is misleading in that sense, I think that there’s merit in pursuing peace on earth (Matt. 5:9), and that’s what I like about the song (and the spirit of the 70′s in general). It’s about a billion percent better than all of the violent, angry music that abounds today (which is just as misleading)!

And I don’t view the part about “imagine there’s no heaven” to be an encouragement to reject God (the Beatles were not atheists by any means). I view it more as a call for everybody to be willing to overlook religious differences and just work together for the common good.
