Before the Dawn Heals Us

I am thinking about attempting to write a weekly record review. There are so many great music albums by little-known artists, and I feel that it is my duty to tell you about some of them!
This week’s album is Before the Dawn Heals Us by the electronic music group M83 (from Antibes, France). Unfortunately, I’m not going to be able to do this album justice, because I’m extremely tired and not in the mood to write a detailed review right now (I’ll make up for it next week).
I bought this CD at Barnes & Noble in Cedar Rapids… it was the only album by M83 in the entire store (special thanks to my friend Laura for wading through loads of horrible pop CDs to find it).
The album has a very cool feel to it… many layers of synthesizers, programmed beats, and digitally-altered vocals. It has some bizarre spoken-word passages in several songs that make things very interesting, but most of the tracks are completely instrumental.
My favorite song is “Don’t Save Us from the Flames.” It has a loud guitar intro that suddenly transitions into a sedated synthesizer riff and quiet vocals. I don’t know which part makes it more surreal, the weird lyrics (“Out of the flames / A piece of brain in my hair”), or the the singer’s thick French accent!
I also like “Teen Angst.” The synthesizer riff sounds like something straight out of an ancient Super Nintendo video game, and I can’t help but smile every time I hear it. It’s so happy and quirky, and it meshes with the rest of the music so well!
If you like electronic music, then you’ll definitely want to check out this album.
