Random stuff….

I like it.

Comment from Jed
Time: November 22, 2007, 1:55 pm

Yep, random stuff is the best.

Comment from Eloprah

This needs more random stuff.

I will help supply it.

Did you know the name for (OHCH2CH2OH) is ethylene glycol - even though there are only single C-C bonds?

Did you know that the best synthesis for ethers, if they are anything other than symmetrical primary ethers such as diethyl ether, is the Williamson synthesis? This is essentially an SN2 attack between a substrate and an alkoxide base/nucleophile. This also reminds me of oranges from Williamson and Sonoma. (Hey, this is the page for randomness!)

Did you know that the apical meristem produces three primary meristems - the protoderm, procambium, and the ground tissue meristem?

Did you know that the Father’s role in salvation is election? The Spirit’s role is calling, regeneration, sanctification, and something else?

Did you know that the “pericope adulterae” isn’t really the inspired or inerrant word of God and should be removed from the Bible?

Did you know that the Bible you have in your bedroom (or wherever you keep it) is not the inspired word of God?

This is a short recap of what I have learned at Cedarville.

Excellent. Eloprah, thank you for your beautiful addition to my (formerly) lonely, somewhat-empty chat page. These are some fascinating random facts that I did not know!!!

The last item especially interests me! Please tell me more! It’s a seemingly controversial statement, and controversy is always exciting, so I eagerly await your further explanation.

Thanks so much for posting, Eloprah!

Comment from Bethany Wheeler
Time: December 20, 2007, 11:00 pm

Wow, Cedarville sounds like a pretty opinionated place! I’m looking forward to more detail as well. Merry Christmas, everyone!

Comment from Eloprah
Time: December 22, 2007, 1:32 pm

To respond in order….

Bethany, really, Cedarville isn’t a very opinionated place, for the most part. Actually, only one of the above statements could be considered a matter of opinion… the rest of them are facts. (Which brings up a further interesting discussion about the difference between fact and opinion, and the belief/truth/reality dichotomy so prevalent today…however, I digress. Although this may be a place for randomness, I would prefer my own posts be lucid.)

Jedidiah, you -who have been through A Beka’s Bible doctrines class, you who are not even a “KJV-only” - you honestly think the final item to be controversial? I will let you think about it a little more.
First, what is the act of inspiration?
Second, what is inerrancy?
Third, who are the Ruckmanites?

No controversy whatsoever; there are two basic positions. Either the *text* you hold in your hands is inspired by God, or it is not. One view is heretical, the other is not.

But why should controversy be exciting? What is the saying? “How good and pleasant it is for brothers to dwell together in harmony” or something of the sort.

Feliz Navidad.

Eloprah, thanks so much for the discussion.

Everybody… you might be wondering what the deal was with the recent spirited conversation that ensued between me and Eloprah regarding her “did you know?” comment. Well, to make a long story short… that was me being an idiot. After a long talk with Eloprah (thanks again, Eloprah) and a bit of research, I learned that…

1. Modern translations of the Bible (i.e. my NIV Bible or my dad’s NKJV study Bible) are not the inspired Word of God. Inspired essentially means “God-breathed,” or “spoken directly from the mouth of God.” Obviously, modern Bibles don’t contain the exact words God spoke (I’m pretty sure He didn’t use English when addressing the Old Testament prophets!). The original manuscripts are the only texts that were inspired.

2. Modern translations of the Bible represent the preserved Word of God. This means that although they don’t contain the exact words God spoke, they do preserve the truths of the original manuscripts. They effectively communicate the essential messages that God wants us to know.

The most important lesson that I have learned is that I need to think before I speak! Thanks again, Eloprah.

Thanks! I like to write stuff, but most of my friends (and family) say that is was sad and weird. But hey, I liked it! It was fun. And thanks again for the compliment!

Wouldn’t it be cool if the most recent chat posts were at the top of the page — and you could navigate through several pages of posts?

To navigate through more pages of posts, we need more posts. So here one is.

Today, I got to play with the $60, 000 IR spectrum.
I also got to play with toxic chemicals…
and a pre-Cold War era boiling point apparatus.

Yes, it was Organic lab. For the third time this week. (Normally, I only have two O labs, but my Ecology lab hasn’t started yet.)

Comment from Jed
Time: January 11, 2008, 9:47 pm

Thanks Eloprah! Those are some nice posts there!!! :) Yeah I need to get to work on the navigational system!

Wow, organic chem lab sounds fun (and possibly a bit dangerous)! What toxic chemicals did you get to use?!? HCl? H2SO4?

Comment from Josiah
Time: January 11, 2008, 10:35 pm

Yeah, well I got to light a bag of chips on fire — and then release Nitric Oxide into the “atmosphere” (the lab we were all in) without a fume hood! Now that’s what I call entertainment. :-D

Comment from Jed
Time: January 11, 2008, 10:52 pm

That sounds fun as well. What does nitric oxide do?

Comment from Josiah
Time: January 12, 2008, 2:42 pm

Nitric Oxide chokes you, causes heart malfunction, and disrupts the entire nervous system. It has also been shown to cause cancer. According to the University, though — we weren’t breathing in any more than people in polluted cities across the nation.

Cough cough… my heart and nervous system! Jk! ;-)

Comment from Jed

Well, Josiah… I believe in the possibility of the Loch Ness monster’s existence. It’s hasn’t really been disproved or proved to me, so… I don’t know. What did it look like, Eloprah?!?

Comment from Jed

Eloprah, those are some excellent questions regarding art!!! Sounds like a good topic for a blog article! I have a lot to say about this… stay tuned.

IMHO. LOL. ROFL.

Do all these abbreviations remind anyone of the abbreviations used by some churches for Christ and Christian symbols (the chi rho, and the writing on the altar cloths in some mainline churches)? I can’t remember what the actual symbol is, but IMHO reminds me strongly of some Greek Christian abbreviation…

Comment from Jed
Time: February 14, 2008, 2:27 pm

Oh yeah, I think I’ve seen “INRI” written on some church things. I think it’s supposed to be an acrostic for the Aramaic statement on the “king of the Jews” sign on Jesus’ cross. I don’t really know what the exact words are.

Eloprah, I’m sure that some churches use the abbreviations “LOL” and “ROFL” regularly (like those pastored by, say, Joel Osteen or Rob Bell). Those churches probably also have free WiFi in the sanctuary/auditorium. And maybe a Starbucks in the foyer. :)

Comment from Eloprah

Thanks, Jedidiah! Yep, I was thinking of INRI!

I like the functionality of your site, Jed. I once used wordpress but then switched, but may switch back. Transferring my content may not take that much time….

The latest youtube was sweet. Not that I necessarily think meeting people that way is a great idea, but it *may* be, given stellar divine intervention, or lots of luck (could be construed as same thing by some). :-)

Comment from Jed

Thanks, Chila!! I highly recommend WordPress… it is just unbelievably flexible, expandable, customizable, etc. and it’s really easy to use.

Regarding the video… I agree, in real life it’s probably extremely risky to attempt to start a relationship in that way!! The probability of an extremely embarrassing and awkward outcome is near 99.9%. :)

Well, it *was* a great idea. Unfortunately, I exercised my woman’s perogative and whittled my “sites” down to one page on one site: the Marmie’s Place standby. Since I rejoined facebook, just have to let other things go…. But I do like your site here!
